Cambridge to trial 5G technology with Connecting Cambridgeshire’s CORE project

Cambridge is set to experience the next generation of mobile technology as the Cambridgeshire Open RAN Ecosystem (CORE) project, led by Connecting Cambridgeshire, begins trials of an advanced 5G Open RAN network early next year.

To push the technology to its limits, Connecting Cambridgeshire will be inviting volunteers to take part in a series of exciting public trials. These trials will bring the CORE project to life for residents and visitors, showcasing how 5G can enable transformative, high-tech experiences.

From February to March 2025, the project will host a series of immersive, 5G-powered activities in the city, potentially including:

  • Live music performance with augmented reality (AR) – Enjoy a concert at the historic Corn Exchange, where AR technology will allow people inside and outside the venue to experience the show in real time.
  • AR and gaming experiences – Participate in a virtual car showcase or interactive art installation, demonstrating the creative potential of 5G.
  • Live-streamed gaming and silent disco – See how 5G enables seamless, interactive, and data-heavy experiences in real time.

Cllr Lorna Dupré, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Environment and Green Investment Committee, which oversees the Connecting Cambridgeshire programme said: “This is an incredibly exciting moment for Cambridge. The CORE project is showcasing how 5G technology can enhance the way we connect, work, and experience our city. By testing cutting-edge applications in real-life settings, we’re unlocking opportunities to transform public spaces, support businesses, and offer residents new, immersive experiences.

“We’re inviting everyone to register for updates and get involved. Whether you’ll then be enjoying live music enhanced with augmented reality headsets or trying out a high-tech gaming experience, you’ll be helping us shape the future of connectivity right here in Cambridge.”

The innovative CORE project is creating a stand-alone, flexible, high-capacity mobile network, with the ability to handle the data demands of busy urban spaces and large-scale events in ways never seen before.

With funding from the Department for Science Innovation & Technology, plus support from a consortium of technology companies, universities, and mobile operators, the CORE project has now successfully installed and activated its first private indoor and outdoor 5G sites in Cambridge city centre.

Initial testing is already underway to ensure the network can manage the high-density demands of bustling locations – an essential step towards transforming how public spaces and major events in Cambridge operate.
